Tips for Planning a Destination Wedding

As you know, it’s wedding season, and I’ve been lucky to do quite a bit of traveling so far this year. Our team will be heading out to Buffalo, NY soon, we were recently in Cleveland, and just about a month ago, we were in the beautiful island of Curacao in the Caribbean.

Considering the amount of traveling I’ve been doing lately ;), I thought it would fun to share a few tips for anyone who may considering or planning a destination wedding or not so local wedding…

Tips for Planning a Destination Wedding

A destination wedding can be exciting experience not only for you, but for your friends and family as well. There’s alot to consider though in deciding if it is right for you. You’ll have an opportunity to celebrate (and hopefully) relax with people you care about most. You’ll get photos of your day with an incredible backdrop, and it will be an experience for everyone to remember.

That being said, it can have its challenges with organizing, and there are a certainly a few things you may want to keep in mind…

Guest List (and their budget)

The average wedding size we typically shoot in the states has about 350-400 guests. Because of the expense of travel, hotel, and time off of work, it can make attending your wedding more challenging for some guests. If you’re ok with not all of your guests being able to make it due to travel, and celebrating with a more intimate group of people, this could be a good option for you to consider.

Challenges of Wedding Planning

Planning your wedding when you don’t live at the wedding’s location is inherently difficult, since you can’t easily visit the venue. If you have a great contact at your venue or a local coordinator who can assist in organizing the details for you, this will help with the challenges of not being there.

Choosing Vendors

When you select your vendors for a destination wedding, you have two options: choosing local vendors, or flying vendors to the venue. Both options can work fine, but you’ll need to do some additional planning–and potentially quite a bit of extra budgeting. If you’re not prepared to spend lots of time coordinating your vendors and working within your budgetary constraints, you might need the assistance of a wedding planner to find the best options for your wedding team.

Weather Constraints

A destination wedding means getting married in an unfamiliar climate. Make sure you know what type of weather to expect and be ready to celebrate rain or shine!

Air Travel

Considering the amount of traveling I’ve been doing lately, I’m going to be looking into apply for the TSA precheck. This could help make the travel experience a bit easier. Here’s the link in case you’re interested in checking it out as well: https://www.tsa.gov/tsa-precheck/apply
